What have the Romans ever done for us?

Half-day walking tour for fascinating discovery of the Roman city of Florence

Some of you might remember the funny Monty Python British comedy group in “Life of Brian” film most famous phrase:

“Alright! – but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”

Life of Brian – Monty Python
Just in case you never saw the movie

This tour want to take you around the old Roman city of Florentia and show you what the Romans have done for a city that remain invisible as it is under our feet, but by walking we will retrace the old city life how it was.

It’s a way to better understand how the constructions have then progressed through the subsequent medieval and renaissance period.

As this is a private tour I am happy to meet your interests and curiosities and ready to make changes and modifications to the proposed itinerary.

Itinerary

We will start from the civic heart of the Roman city in Piazza della Repubblica. Here we could have found the Curia, the Ancient Senate and a triad Temple dedicated to pagan Gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.

We will then move on and look at the traces of the defensive walls along via del Proconsolo reaching piazza santa Croce passing by the temple of Isis and the outside city walls where the amphitheater was. We will be acting as the Romans visiting places of work, worship and recreation.

Then we will return to the city center crossing piazza della Signoria with the option to visit the theatre remains inside the museum or simply from the outside strolling around the many secret spots of aqueduct, baths, and early Christian churches.

On request we can extend our discovery of ancient times by visiting Fiesole where Etruscan artifices and Roman ruins can still be found.
